In Geoffrey Sirc’s “Boxlogic” I thought that the assignment for the Arcades Project would be a great addition to my lessons for next year, as well. I plan on having the students do the arcades project for my author research assingment. I am going to have them open up their project by having images and other ideas that they develop introducing their author in a general way. Each hyperlink and new page will enable them to organize the required material: early life, historical connections, other author connections, texts written by the author, etc. Not only do I think that this will serve as a great organizational technique for exploring the author that they have chosen, I also feel that this will enable the students who find it easier to connect information using images that they can relate to rather than writing will attempt with more ambition.

I found the section on boxlogic, by Sirc, encouraging as an attempt to engage all my students in a world that focuses on technology rather than written text. Allowing students to use art as a means of expression and self reflection, you are essentially allowing and encouraging them to accomplish the same tasks that you would be requiring of them through the use of writing. It is not something that I think should completely substitute for writing, but it is a means of assisting the process. I plan on assigning a similar assignment to my high school freshmen next year as a beginning approach to writing in the classroom. Can you express yourself and tell me who you are and what literature is to you through the use of images and pictures? I think that this would be a great segway to what is literature and writing?

In Stratford’s “The Throwaway Medium,” we read about a culture that has come and gone but is soon to come again if technology permits and works in its intended fashion. Art used to be a desired attraction that enabled thought-provoking attempts to interpret what was meant by the placement of images. Today art is merely pleasurable to the eye as a piece to be viewed and admired. I agree with Stratford, however, when he determines that art and visual rhetoric are elements of inspiration and should not be overlookes on the scholastic spectrum of learning. In a world that focuses on the technological advancements of media and other variations of artistic approaches, students in rhetorical fields can find a happy medium between the new and old methods of admiration and art.

In “The Problem of Electronic Argument: A Humanist’s Perspective,” Michelle Shauf discusses the new and improved means of communicating a message through the use of visual elements. By using what Shauf calls the grammar of visual rhetoric, teachers can use a new technology that can not only engage students who have become interdependent on technological advancements, like the internet and blogs, they can also help students become familiar with a variety of methods associated with rhetoric and composition. I think that students who have access to this as a new device of learning may find an underlying desire to learn rhetoric and composition where there was no desire before.

Gail Okawa described her experience working at a writing center. As she did this I started to see some of the difficulties associated with teaching composition without practical theories and background. I find that one of the issues she addressed that I definately felt connected to my own personal teaching career was the lack of knowledge neccesary to teach how to make literature and writing as a dicipline completely comprehesible to all students while understanding and adapting to the variety of cultural, sexual, and historical backgrounds of each student. By taking into consideration all of the influences and adapting the text, you make it more understandable and relative to the student.

Anne Donadey and Francoise Lionnet examine the historical approaches and changes made in the sexuality and Gender based literature of literature. Throughout history there have been many issues that prevented writers from expressing themselves in public without the entire dispproval of society. Yet, even today there are issues that are not to be touched beyond the cultural expectations that learners, parents, and teachers find acceptable. For example, it is still deemed unacceptalbe to teach a story that discusses a character’s sexuality in the public school system. Parents find the words “jacking off” inappropriate and unacceptable. Could you imagine what they would do if you had their child read a story about a boy who was uncertain about his sexuality? In hopes that our culture will adapt as Donadey and Lionnet explain, one day we might find that this becomes a district approved text like the texts written by women and African American writers have become.

Migration and literature? What are the connections? From the very beginning of early American literature, migration has played an important role in literature. By understanding the cultural background of the pilgrims, students are able to understand where our countries literature originated and why. It goes even further, by explaining and elaborating the ideas of early Native Americans oral stories and early colonialist. Our literature, as Susan Friedman states, comes from the migration of settlers and cultures. This is a continual source of contributive material to literature as a curriculum and will continue being and integral part of the subject as long as people continue migrating to and from diverse communities of learners and ideals. Each time a new source develops a piece of literature, they are contributing to the material that students of the future will be learning.

Mc Gann’s essay “Interpretation” reminds me of the many times that I have attempted to teach a text hoping that the students would recognize some connection that enables them to interpret, and live through the text. Many times the students find minor connections and have trouble definitively finding how it applies to them as a students. This is why the historical context of a piece of literature is imperative for building an interpretation built on knowledge of the text. In order for students to find an interpretation that allows them to “read between the lines” as McGann states, the student must put themself in the text as it was written. Over time literature has changed and manifested because of outside influences that have to be taken into consideration before being able to fully engage in the text.

When I was reading the “Keyword Searches” chapter, I realized that when I do my research, I tend to focus too much on the keyword search. I found that through reading the chapter, this not only eliminates many possible sources of interest that don’t fit into the keyword that you put in, but also narrows down or broadens your search too much. The key is to use the keyword search with categorized words and phrases that enable all items under this category that may help broaden the search enough that the search is successful and brings forth more items of interest.
